I, of course, agree with the customer, that that should not be her problem, and that the agency should eat the cost of the price difference as it was their fault. The car rental agency wanted to upsize them to the next level but make the customer pay. Once I arrived at the Mex Rent Car office (just outside the airport), while I was waiting, I overheard a conversation from another customer.Īpparently, the other customer had booked a car in a certain fare class that was no longer available. I want to be completely up front that this did not happen to me, but I did observe it. I guess it really was broken and not “mysteriously.” So, no worries there! However, I just had to go back to the booth at the airport to have it returned, and since I had to go to the airport anyway to fly home…no problemo.
When I came to drop off the car their machine was mysteriously “not working,” and my red flag popped up. He told me there would be a hold placed on my card, and when I returned, so would the money. I had read some reviews of deposit scams for some other companies, but I saw not one Mex Rent a Car review that said it would be a problem with them. Perk of own car: Get there before the tourists! The insurance that I pre-purchased was only for the car itself. I asked about it (and had my Mexican friend ask just in case it was because I was foreign), but it’s apparently standard. Honestly, it was such a small addition in the grand scheme of things, that I didn’t fight it. When I arrived in Mexico City, the car rental insurance I already paid for “wasn’t enough,” and I was asked to pay more.
I know that my base rental was $1 a day, so I opted for the insurance that was like $6 a day more. I’m honestly not sure if it was a scam or not.
